Ski Odgen

The city of Ogden serves as the lodging and apres-ski base for Snowbasin and Powder Mountain ski resorts. With a population over 60,000, Ogden supplies all needed services. Historic 25th Street in downtown provides the one-of-a-kind shopping, dining and nightlight expected in a ski resort.

Snowbasin's 2,959 vertical feet of ski trails, powder bowls and lush glades cover over 2,500 acres and truly offer terrain to suit everyone's needs. Our 64 designated runs include 11 percent novice terrain, 45 percent intermediate and 44 percent expert. Twelve lifts, including two high-speed gondolas, two handle tows, one magic carpet and a detachable quad, provide a lift capacity of over 14,500 skiers per hour, meaning less time in line. Our wide runs ensure you'll have all the elbow room you need. Nordic trails are also available for Nordic skiing and snowshoe enthusiasts. Snowbasin's three day lodges will tempt anyone to stay in-doors and enjoy the fine cuisines and sumptuous scenes served daily. Whether you're an expert, taking to the mountain for the first time or here for the food, Snowbasin's mountain will fit your style.

  • General Information - As provided by the resort:

    Air Service to Resort:

Ogden is 35 miles north of the Salt Lake International Airport. The airport has ten major airlines providing over 600 flights daily. 67 cities have non-stop service.

Ogden Hinkley Airport is the charter airport for the 2002 Olympics. It regularly serves B-737/727, MD-80's and DC- 9s for charter and cargo. Select from a rental car or a limousine service for transportation to lodging.

    Other Transportation Options:

Ogden is at the junction of I-15 and I-84. Greyhound serves Ogden.

    Common Misperceptions:

    A. There is plenty do to and drink after a day on the slopes. Misperception - It is hard to get a drink. As elsewhere, restaurants with liquor license can offer any type of drink with food and saloons serve beer. If you just want a drink of wine or liquor without eating, you pay a private membership charge (generally $5 for 2 weeks). We think of it as a cover charge.

    B. There is enough skiing for a weeklong trip. If I haven't heard of your area, it must be small. To the contrary, skiers or boarders can stretch over 5,550 acres at Powder Mtn. and 3200 acres at Snowbasin. The fact that there is not ski in/ski out lodging makes some think they are just small day use areas.

    Top 5 Selling Points:

    A. Site of Men's and Women's Olympic Downhills - Snowbasin will host the men's and women's Downhill, Super G and Combined races for the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Men's Downhill has been rated by National Geographic Adventure Magazine as one of the top 100 Adventures in America.

    B. Ski the day of arrival and departure - Ogden is 35 minutes north of the Salt Lake International Airport and Snowbasin is only 45 minutes away (via three and four lane highway).

    C. Affordable - The lodging base is not dependent on the ski market for their revenue. Because it has a large corporate and government market, they offer their best prices in the winter.

    D. Not crowded - Think of Ogden for the last minute caller wanting to ski over Christmas, President's Weekend or Martin Luther King's Weekend. There is a large lodging base only 20 - 25 minutes away. Plus, the resorts have never gotten near their lift capacity and the terrain is so massive that the quantity and quality of skiing/riding delight guests.

    E. New Destination - In the past three years, Snowbasin - A Sun Valley Resort has used about 90 million to add three new day lodges, a skier services building, the most advanced snowmaking in America, doubled the size and a new road. The service and ambiance is like Sun Valley - just easy to get to. Powder Mountain always has untracked powder and offers heli-skiing. Brand new lodging, including condos are at the base of Powder Mountain. Downtown Ogden has aggressively been adding to its entertainment and dining options. (All one of a kind.)

    Best Resort Client:

    A. Adventurers who want to try the newest, hot spot.

    B. Student groups because of affordability.

    C. Ski clubs delight in the affordability and great selection of restaurants, shops and entertainment within walking distance of downtown hotels.

    D. Last minute caller for holidays - We have a large lodging base that primarily relies on corporate clients for occupancy.

    Recommendations / Highlights:

    A. Snowmobiling - Most popular trailhead in Utah. Over 400 miles of snowmobiling is available in Monte Cristo wilderness area. Ride over to Hardware Ranch - one of two elk preserves in the U.S.

    B. Curling - Times are set aside at the Ice Sheet, the Olympic venue for curling, to teach newcomers the sport.

    C. Antiquing - Ogden has over 20 antique shops, many in walking distance of hotels

    D. Heli-skiing - Do one heli-ski run and spend the rest of the day at Powder Mountain or schedule a whole weekend of heli-skiing, just for your group.

    E. Dog sled and antique sleigh rides - The outfitter for snowmobiling has an old western town constructed. They do dog or sleigh rides out to this area and serve dutch oven dinners in the original trading post.

    F. Tubing - Nordic Valley, the area's smallest ski resort offers tubing during the day or at night. Powder Mountain also has night skiing.

    G. Hot Air Ballooning - This activity is extremely popular in the valley between Powder Mountain and Snowbasin.

    What's New This Year:

Snowbasin - A 43,000 square foot day lodge and skier's service building at the base of one of the gondolas provides a village ambiance. Two on mountain lodges will be completed before the beginning of the season. If you are familiar with Sun Valley architecture, you will notice the similarities.

Powder Mountain - They already have a half-pipe for boarders. They are adding tabletops and rails at a second location on the mountain. Lodging - Additional condos are being built at Moose Hollow. There will be a total of 60 condos in the rental pool.

Ogden - A 250-seat amphitheater will open next to the historic district. This will be the site of the nightly Olympic celebrations and future festivals. Dinosaur Park will be open year round with the addition of a new museum building. Dog sleds are being added at Red Rock Outfitters.

Why This Resort is Special or Unique:

Close to the site where the driving of the Golden Spike created the nation's transcontinental railroad, Ogden's heritage is closely tied to trains. The area around Union Station became known as the "wildest street in the west" because of the prevalence of bordellos, liquor, drugs and gambling. The turn of the century buildings on Historic 25th Street have now house antiques, boutiques, pubs and cafes making it the apres ski center for this area.

Snowbasin Ski Resort, site of the 2002 Olympic downhills, is upscale with service by gondolas, a tram and brand new day lodges. The amenities and service are the quality expected at Sun Valley, Snowbasin's sister resort.

Powder Mountain is the best place for powder hounds. It boasts that you can find untracked powder almost any day during ski season. It has over 5,500 skiable acres but much of it is backcountry accessible by snowcat or with skiing off the backside with pick up from a regular shuttle. 500 inches of "the greatest snow on earth" make it a skiers or boarders paradise.
