Vision

The following information was presented by Bruce Rosard and John Morgan at the March 2001 Network at Whistler.
Industry Vision Committee
Background
We reviewed ski industry research that focused on what the industry needs to do to grow the sports of skiing and snowboarding.
Key findings included:
1. The "worst aspects" of snow sports are:
Nobody to go with
Not fun unless good
Hard to learn
2. More than 45% of parents with children would ski more if it were "easier to include children"
3. The earlier people learn to ski or snowboard, the better they become. The better they become the more they ski and snowboard.
4. The lifetime "value" to the ski industry of a skier who begins skiing at age 25 is $14,466
The lifetime "value" to the ski industry of a skier who begins skiing at age 10 is $52,024
The bottom line - GET THEM SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING EARLY, AND MAKE THEM BETTER
So we decided to focus our efforts on getting more kids involved in snow sports. Our committee has been instrumental in the founding of an industry wide effort to introduce kids of all ages to the wonders of the mountains.
The current working name of this effort is "Mountain Clubs"

Vision Statement
To Share the Passion of the Mountains
Mission Statement
"Share our collective passion for the mountains to encourage the educational, recreational, and personal growth of North America's youth using mountain sports as our vehicle."
Objectives
- SHARE - the passion of the mountains
- REACH - kids in schools, clubs, and churches
- INFORM - provide an online resource for more information and incentives to get kids (6-18)
involved in mountain sports
- FOCUS - on fun, recreation, education, physical fitness, the environment and personal growth
Participating Organizations
The following organizations are currently working with the SkiTops Vision committee on this program:
The Skiing Company
SIA - Snowsports Industries of America
NSAA - National Ski Area Association
Snow Monsters
PSIA - Professional Ski Instructors of America
Ski Area Management Magazine
Mountain Travel Symposium
EM&M Consumer Ski Shows
BEWI Consumer Ski Shows

Game Plan
- Mobilize athletes and media to go to schools and clubs to share the passion of mountain sports on a regional basis. Show a video to get the kids excited and let the athletes introduce the mountains, and motivate the kids to go to the web site for special offers and information on programs.
- Develop a web site listing kids programs, events, and special offers that motivate kids and families to go to the mountains.
Program Roll Out
This program will be rolled out to the ski industry this spring at the following events:
SIA conference - early March
SkiTops conference - late March
Mountain Travel Symposium - early April
NSAA conference - early May
What can SkiTops members do to contribute?
Tour Operator Members: We will be looking for volunteers to go to local schools, churches and other youth organizations to spread the word about this program and be a mentor to kids, teachers and parents to show them how to form clubs and coordinate trips to the mountains. Let us know if you are interested in helping out in your local area.
Supplier Members: We need to know about all of the existing programs you offer for kids age 6-18 and for you to consider what additional special offers you would like to provide to help this grassroots effort to grow the sports of skiing and snowboarding. Please get us your information!
